Run with the Hare: A Fulbright journey to bring an Irish Revolutionary to the stage.
Join Professor Troy as he explores how Irish family ties brought archival documents to life in his new play, Run with the Hare (… and Hunt with a Hound). Backed by a Fulbright Scholar Award, Tim’s research into an Irish Revolutionary also led to the discovery of his Famine-era ancestors. Play synopsis: Balms by day, bombs by night. Dan Stapleton—pharmacist, hurling champion, and family man—awakens to Irish nationalism in 1918. As Ireland moves toward independence, he secretly produces weapons, gathers intelligence, and builds alliances under the guise of ordinary life. Based on his 1953 Bureau of Military History Witness Statement, Run with the Hare reveals Stapleton’s critical role in the Battle of Kilkenny’s success.
Timothy X. Troy ’85: playwright and director, has been the Hurvis Professor of Theatre and Drama at Lawrence since 1997. He teaches acting, directing, script analysis, and playwrighting, and received the First Year Studies Teaching Prize. His directing spans plays, operas, and audio theatre, with a focus on stories that shape our lives. His plays explore how social forces impact families and the future. Troy also teaches in Business & Entrepreneurship and Environmental Studies. In 2022–2023, he was a Fulbright Scholar at University College Dublin.

Alumni College, Session C: Terry Holt '75
Narrative Medicine
This session rises out of my work in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. My field of specialization is generally described as narrative medicine, a reform movement in medical education that seeks to incorporate humanities disciplines, especially literature, into medical education, with the goal of offering doctors greater insight into the motives shaping their behaviors as caregivers. My own work in this field has concentrated on creative writing, publishing semi-autobiographical narratives of medical practice. This session will start off with a reading of one such story, as a springboard to a discussion of participants’ own experiences with medicine.
Terry Holt: is an emeritus professor of Geriatric Medicine and teaching professor of Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He holds PhD and MA degrees in English and the MFA in creative writing, all from Cornell University. He earned his MD from the University of North Carolina, where he also completed residency training in internal medicine and geriatrics.
